Squirrels
Squirrels are a type of rodent that is found throughout North America. They have a bushy tail and are usually gray or brown in color. Squirrels live in trees and eat nuts, acorns, and other seeds. They are also known for being very playful, and often chase each other around in trees. Squirrels can be a nuisance to homeowners, as they can steal food from gardens and birdfeeders, but they also play an important role in the ecosystems of forests.
There are two main types of squirrels- tree squirrels and ground squirrels. Tree squirrels, as their name suggests, live in trees. The most common type of tree squirrel in North America is the gray squirrel. Gray squirrels are about 2 feet long, including their tail, and weigh around 1 pound. They are mostly gray, but can also be brown or black. Ground squirrels live, as you guessed it, on the ground! These include chipmunks and prairie dogs. Ground squirrels are much smaller than tree squirrels, only being around 6 inches long and weighing less than half a pound.
Nuisance Squirrel Control
Squirrels are considered nuisance animals for a variety of reasons. One reason is that they can damage property. They often chew through wires, insulation, and other materials in order to get to food or to create nests. This can lead to costly repairs and electrical problems.
Another issue with squirrels is that they can be carriers of disease. They can spread illnesses like the plague, rabies, and others to humans and other animals. They can also contaminate food with their droppings, which can cause illness.
Finally, squirrels can be very noisy. They chatter and squeal frequently, and this noise can be annoying or disruptive.
Squirrels are considered a nuisance animal because they often invade homes and businesses in search of food. They can also damage property by chewing on wires, insulation, and other materials. Squirrels can also spread diseases like rabies and plague. In some areas, they are even known to attack people.
Things to Do if You're Bitten by a Squirrel
Squirrel bite wounds can become infected, so it's important to seek medical attention if you're bitten. Here is what you should do for first aid:
- Clean the wound with soap and water.
- Apply pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding.
- Apply a bandage to the wound.
- Elevate the wounded limb if possible.
- See a doctor as soon as possible.
Do not try to catch or kill the squirrel that bit you- this could make the situation worse. If you can, take a picture of the squirrel so that it can be identified and tested for rabies. Try to stay calm and avoid panic, as this will help prevent further injury.
